Caldwell County, NC, government leadership approached Sublmnl to develop a new identity for the county. Like many municipalities, Caldwell County had never had a cohesive brand identity, so it was time to define an image that would feel instantly recognizable and genuinely resonate with locals and visitors alike.

The Challenge
Many county and municipal governments are quietly sitting on decades of inconsistent, outdated, or nonexistent branding: official seals and department logos that were never designed as a unified system. As more local governments invest in placemaking and civic branding to attract residents, visitors, and economic development, Caldwell County needed an identity that could represent the entire county consistently, across departments, while still feeling authentically rooted in local geography and history.

Leaning Into the Blue Ridge
Caldwell County has been informally known as “The Gateway to the Blue Ridge” for decades, so we built the new identity around the area’s most defining geographic feature: the ever-present Blue Ridge Mountains of Appalachia, which give the region both a strong sense of home for locals and a genuine draw for visitors.

Historically, Caldwell County was known for its role in the furniture manufacturing industry, but shifting economic conditions and overseas manufacturing moved that identity into the past. Rather than lean on a legacy industry no longer central to the county’s future, we shifted the brand’s focus toward Caldwell County’s role in North Carolina’s growing Foothills region, reviving the “Gateway to the Blue Ridge” moniker as the county’s official brand slogan.

Building a Scalable Identity System
We developed a bold primary identity system built to flex across the many departments and touchpoints of county government — from the official seal to individual department branding — a common need for civic brands that must represent one consistent county identity while still accommodating dozens of distinct government functions.

The Result
Caldwell County now has a representative, modern identity rooted in genuine local geography and forward-looking economic identity, one built to grow and scale alongside the county for years to come.
